Original model
The launch design, which could stand upright or lie flat. Includes an i.LINK port, two USB ports and an internal expansion bay; the earliest Japanese units used a PC Card slot instead.

SCPH-50000 series
Late revision of the original case. Dropped the i.LINK port and added a built-in infrared receiver for the DVD remote.

2004
Slimline
A much smaller redesign with a top-loading disc lid, built-in Ethernet and an external power supply. The expansion bay was removed, so the internal hard drive accessory is not supported.

History
Sony reports more than 155 million units shipped, the most of any home console.
Played DVD-Video out of the box, uncommon for a game console in 2000.
2004
The slimline redesign cut the case to less than a quarter of its original volume.
Remained in production alongside the PlayStation 3 until Sony ended manufacturing in early 2013.
